[Question #9114] Fellatio and hiv

Hello doc,
I'm a man who had oral sex exposure with women unknown status ( i put my penis inside her mouth and she sucked it ) approximately for 1 min or less without condom used.
She is working in massage parlor, she is always participating in handjob and sometimes blowjob according to what she told me.
My questions are:
1- is there any risk for acquiring hiv ?
2- I'm now in the third week with no obvious symptoms, so do i need testing for HIV ?

Welcome to our Forum and thanks for your questions. I'll be glad to comment: This was a low risk exposure. Most commercial sex workers do not have STI's including HIV and even when they do, most exposures do not lead to infection. Infections after receipt of oral sex are relatively uncommon in comparison to other sorts of exposures.
1. This was a virtually no risk encounter in terms of HIV risk, There are no proven cases of HIV which were acquired through receipt of oral sex so, even if she did have HIV, there would be no risk for HIV
2. There is little risk for other STIs. If you have gone three weeks without symptoms, it is unlikely that you acquired the two STIs most common from oral sex, gonorrhea or non-chlamydial NGU.
3. At this point I see no medical reason for testing
Hope these comments are helpful. EWH

If you choose to take a test at this time it will be negative, providing further evidence that you were not infected with HIV. You do not need to worry. You can relax. EWH---

As I mentioned in my original response, the encounter you described was a virtually no risk encounter for acquisition of HIV. Your 28 day result provides further evidence that you did not acquire HIV. Over 99% of persons who acquire HIV will have a positive test before 28 days. I have never seen a person with a negative test at 28 days go on to become positive. I would not worry and see no need for further testing
This completes this thread. Take care. EWH
