[Question #9167] Cunnilingus Risk
|
Hi Drs. Thank you in advance for the great information you provide here. About a week ago, I received a handjob from an escort and performed unprotected cunnilingus on her. Yesterday, my left tonsil felt inflamed and it was uncomfortable to swallow. Also experienced pressure in my left ear. No pain/discomfort on the right side of my throat. Upon researching last night, I discovered that this could be oral gonorrhea from my unprotected encounter. Schedule-wise, I think I can get in for testing tomorrow afternoon, but as I write this, my throat is starting to feel better. Is this speed of resolution typical? Could this be something else?

Welcome to our forum. Thanks for your question and for your confidence in our service. I’ll be glad to comment. While I certainly do not want to discourage you from having a throat swab taken to test for oral gonorrhea it is unlikely that that is the source of your sore throat. The exposure you describe was relatively low risk. Most commercial sex workers do not have STIs and, even when they do, single exposures rarely we do infection. Most oral STI’s do not cause any symptoms at all.
The symptoms you described are certainly typical of those we see with “every day”, viral throat infections and I expect that is what is causing your problem, not oral gonorrhea. Further, as you suggest the rapid resolution of your symptoms is more consistent with a viral sore throat than any thing else.
I hope this information and assessment is helpful to you. If any part of my answer is unclear or do you have additional questions, please don’t hesitate to use her up to two follow ups for clarification. EWH

Thank you for the quick response. This morning my throat is further improved and I definitely have some.post nasal drip which would seem to be more typical of an "every day" infection. I wouldn't be able to test until next week anyway so your response is reassuring for my anxiety.

Our of curiosity, is 2g of azithromycin alone effective to cure oral gonorrhea? I know it is not the recommended treatment. Thx!

As you know, we provide up to 3 responses to each client's questions. This is my 3rd response, after which the thread will be closed without further responses.
Azithromycin 2.0 grams taken at once will cure some but not all gonorrhea. Probably about 70% although response rates vary from place to place
This concludes this thread. I hope that the information I have provided has been helpful. EWH

Thanks. My anxiety got the best of me and I went ahead and was treated with a single 500mg dose of Ceftriaxone (I was unable to get a throat swab.) Being in North America, can I move on?

Thanks for the additional information. The ceftriaxone with cure gonorrhea if it were present. At this point I would encourage you to move on.
In addition, I should point out that we provide up to three responses to each clients question. As this is my third response, this thread will be closed now. Take care. EWH
