[Question #9182] Std risks

I had protected sex less than a week ago (tomorrow will be one week) but also received oral sex from the same person unprotected. Now after a couple days I started getting cramping in my pelvic area and my vagina is burning. I at first though it was a UTI but that was negative by the test I bought (not sure how accurate those are). I am not sure if this is all in my head but I’m looking up stuff on the internet. Which I know is a terrible idea. I’m thinking I have HIV or something serious like that. What’s the likelihood that I get HIV from receiving oral?. I know I’m protected for the most part since I used a condom while having sex. The oral sex concerns me. I’m not sure if this could be also chlamydia, or BV or anything else. There is just burning and no discharge that I can see. I just feel off and my back is also hurting. Plus muscle aches. Feel nauseous and sweaty. Not sure how soon HIV symptoms start. Should I get a test after several weeks to make sure? Thanks !

Welcome t our Forum and thanks for your questions. I'll be glad to comment, amplifying on the analysis you have already done so nicely.
Let me start with two comments- first, congratulations on your commitment to safe, condom protected sex. That will do much to reduce your STI risk which tends to be far higher with genital-genital contact than with receipt of cunnilingus. Second, your assessment of the internet is right on target- so much of what is there is wrong, making rare events sound common and suggesting that the risk for HIV and STIs is far higher than in the case. The fact is that most people do not have STIs and that even when a partner is infected, most exposures do not lead to infection strongly makes it unlikely that you were infected. With regard to your HIV risk, this is a very, very uncommon event. The CDC, whose estimates tend to be conservative, estimates that, if your partner had untreated HIV infection, your risk for infection would be 1 in 10,000. In other words, IF your partner had untreated HIV, which is unlikely, the odd are 99.99% that you would not get infected.
Regarding your symptoms, abdominal cramping, vaginal burning and discomfort is not normal and if this persists, I suggest you see your Gyn for evaluation, not because I think you have an STI or HIV but because it is important to evaluate these symptoms, particularly if they are getting worse or not improving. I would repeat your test for a UTI, suggest STI testing for your peace of mind (FYI, if these symptoms were due to HIV, your test would be positive- when symptoms are due to HIV, tests are always positive)
I hope this information is helpful. If any part of this response is unclear, please use your up to to follow-ups for clarification. Once you see your GYN, if you choose to do so, please let us know what she/he says. EWH

I did end up going to an urgent care for the time being and get an STD test. They also did test my urine for UTI and all came back clear. They are sending my sample out to test for chlamydia and others. I ended up getting an antibiotic and a shot to help cure whatever it is. (Hope it works) They couldn’t give me a definitive answer on what I have. I have a gyn appt next month so I may ask for more tests like HIV etc just to have that peace of mind even though your response has given me the confidence that I would not get HIV from such a low risk event: . it’s weird to have all these symptoms and no positive for UTI. But I appreciate your response and thank you reassuring me. This will help me not want to continually look on the internet to diagnose myself when it will just amplify my paranoia. Thanks!

Thanks for your follow up in the additional information. I anticipate that your tests for STI‘s will be negative but agree with you that the peace of mind achieved through testing is worth it. I suspect that the medication that you were provided is treatment for gonorrhea or chlamydia should those test be positive. Please let us know what your test show. Please don’t worry. EWH---

So my gonorrhea and chlamydia tests are negative. Are there any STDs that I should also be getting tested for? My concern is that I am still having cramps and lower back pain plus burning. The meds that the dr gave me were to treat the gonorrhea or chlamydia if I had it. So do I continue taking the antibiotics ? Dr sent me a note that it’s not necessary but then why am I having these pains. All this sounds like uti or possible kidney stone but my urine came back clear too???
Am I correct in assuming this is Not STD related at all? Is there any std that can have these symptoms that I haven’t already been checked for?
I assume If I don’t have gonorrhea or chlamydia and I think those are most common and easier to get than others. I don’t know if I should wait to finish the antibiotics and then reach out to dr. What she gave me was docycline (sp?)

I am pleased but not all that surprised to hear that your tests are negative. Given that your only unprotected exposure was receipt of cunnilingus, I suspect that your current discomfort is unrelated to the sexual encounter you describe above. When you saw your doctor did she/he have other thoughts regarding the origin of your discomfort? EWH ---
