[Question #9200] Possible HSV

I would like to keep this as brief as possible but provide enough details for your response..  So on 9/5 I had protected vaginal intercourse with a woman whom I am newly acquainted and don't fully know her sexual history. This was not a long or rough encounter.  She says she has tested however we know that the standard STD panel does not cover HSV.  On 9/6 I noticed what appeared to be a hard lump under the skin in the genital area above my penis.  I squeezed this to see if anything was in it.  Nothing came out and it was just tender and irritated from that point on and I left it alone.  As we move on to Sept 9 I notice a small (single) skin colored bump toward the base of my penis. It was hardly noticeable but as I stretched the skin to get a closer look it appeared to have a white head that contained puss. I never popped and it it did not blister or ulcerate from what I can see. As of today the lump which resembles a boil is still firm how ever it has decreased in circumference and appears to be going away.  As of today (5 days after noticing it) the pimple has gone down and appears to be healing as you would expect a normal pimple too.  Just another random detail.  I am a runner and run about 20 miles a week and sweat a lot in that area so I do get the boils and pimples from time to time.  My concern is the timing in which the pimple arrived after my encounter, and I hear that some people can have mild outbreaks that are barely noticeable.  However I am aware that often times people have multiple lesions, sores, that blister and crust over.  However in my case this did not appear that way.  Over the past couple of days I have has some considerable anxiety over this.

What are the chances that this is an outbreak?
How long does it take for a typical herpes lesion to heal?
Is it too late to have these looked at by a doctor and swabbed?

Brief Update as I am awaiting your response - Later in the evening I went to urgent care and was examined by a Physician Assistant. She stated that the boil looking bump in my pubic area did not resemble herpes at all given that in was still skin colored and hard after one week.  as for the bump/pimple toward the base of the penis I showed her a picture from the 2nd day after which I noticed is and based on the appearance at Day 5 said said that it did not appear heretic to her. She also stated that herpes lesion typically won't heal that fast.  She did state that it was too late for a swab.

I also don't think that your symptoms sound herpetic at all.  I am curious about what the urgent care person thought the bump was about?
The condom that you used for intercourse will offer you good protection against many STI's
Also, herpes would not show up that soon after a new infection - way too early.  The average time from infection to symptoms is 5.5 days with the range being 2-10 days.
While it is true that herpes can present in many different ways, I don't think this is anything to worry about in terms of herpes.  But I'm very glad that you were seen as that is always better than anything we can offer you over the interent.

Hey Terri Thanks for your reply.  So the large bump that was in the pubic area she said it was likely do to my trimming that area from and sweat from being active and not uncommon for that area.  When I noticed that one I began to get worried a bit.  But was able to calm myself realizing that I do get these and I had one a a few weeks before that I was able to pop and it took a while to go away. So at the point I was on a high level of alert being as though I just had sex.  So when the single bump/pimple showed up toward the base of the penis that Friday I really freaked out.  She did not provide too much of a rationale for that one.  But I will say it came a a single skin colored bump then it later looked to have a small head on it.  the pics that I showed here were from day 2 and day 3.  At Day 3 it appeared dry with flaky skin.  But day 5 it was just a flat spot that was kind of shiny, no sore not an open wound.  As of today it is gaining normal pigment color and barely noticeable.

I should also add that while I was there I did go ahead and request a basic STD Panel and all tests came back negative.  Do you think I should test for HSV. Me the Physician Assistant spoke about this. Her advice was now is too early, but for now keep an eye on things and if anything else appears come in for a swab.

I would agree with the PA, too early to test with any accuracy.  I would recommend waiting at least 6 weeks to test
Your bump surely doesn't sound like herpes to me.  But as you know, pictures aren't allowed here.  Also, herpes lesions are not really popable like pimples are.  Did pus come out when you popped it?

Terri i could have popped it. But I decided not to and by day 3 it had began to dry out and the skin was flaky. By day 5 it was gone. In all honesty if it were not for the fact that I had sex a few days before I would not have thought much of it.
