[Question #9245] no one gets hiv hepatitis c stds from blood draw (blood collection tube )

Hello answer my following points

I took my son for blood draw at hospital I just know that no patient /client gets hiv hepatitis c from blood draw so this will be no different

1) QUESTION risk : worried that blood collection tube  was reused from previous Patient and existing blood that was inside the blood collection tube from previous patient would flow back into the luer adapter  needle once  punctured and then into the needle into my sons vein this is no risk for hiv or hepatitis c  stds or other blood borne diseases?
Nurse used hollow butterfly needle  to draw blood from vein  it has long tube which is attached to  a second needle(luer adapter needle? not sure what its called )  pierces the blood collection tube .

For info : blood collection tube is  also known as vacutainer  it has has coloured rubber top  made of glass or plastic and has vaccum inside it and then sucks blood once it punctures the luer adapter needle and fits into the vaccuatainer holder  and blood flows out of your arm and into blood collection tube .

2) to answer my question in point 1 above I CONFIRM  similar replies in  your fourm that ONLY WAY a patient ever gets hiv hepatitis c  , stds or other blood borne infections from blood draw or injection procedure  if nurse re used needle or syringe from  a previous patient .
So that means blood collection tube is NOT risk for hiv or hepatitis c  ,stds or other blood borne infection since it’s not a needle  it’s that  SIMPLE  right   ?

3) my doctor told  me blood collection tube  are the same world wide and are designed in such a way that they cannot be reused even if nurse tried to draw blood with it so blood inside blood collection tube from previous patient will not be injected back from blood collection tube into the needle of my sons vein so no risk for hiv hepatitis c stds can you elaborate further ?

4) blood collection tube also known as vacutainer ? I  need to make sure we are talking about same thing

4b) types of hollow needle does not matter   used in future whether butterfly needle which has two needles and a long tube or just double pointed needle without the long tube if  used when drawing blood from blood collection tube  ?

Welcome to the forum. Thank you for your confidence in our services, and for having reviewed our replies to other questions like yours, and probably researching other websites as well.

It would appear you are simply looking for confirmation of what you have learned. I am happy to do that. Your statements indicate you correctly understand the situation.

1) "I just know that no patient /client gets hiv hepatitis c from blood draw so this will be no different."  Exactly right! And your description of the procedures the nurse used sounds correct and 100% safe.

2) These statements also are exactly correct.

3) Your doctor also is correct.

4) Vacutainer® is by far the most commonly used blood draw tube world wide. It is the only kind I or my clinic and hospital have used for over 40 years.

4b) These two components of the Vacutainer system are equally safe, with no possibility of cross contamination of blood from other patients, and no risk of infecting anybody having blood drawn.

In the US and other industrialized countries, in the past 40 years nobody is known to have acquired HIV or other blood borne infections from having blood drawn, and this probably is true world wide. There is no chance your child was infected. You should not be worried at all.

I hope these comments are helpful. Let me know if anything isn't clear.

Thanks for reply yes I want to clarify if you have understood just ANSWER this and I’ll be on my way out of this forum

1) in previous post point 1 you have understood that blood collection tube had blood inside it from  previous patient ?  Reason why I say this we had a failed attempt at drawing blood. And I did not see blood collection tube nurse changed it after that

1a) may I just know what prevents blood from previous patient  to flow back  from blood collection into the needle back into the vein during blood draw  ? Is it because the vaccum inside it is finished ??thus no risk for hiv hepatitis b c stds

1b) blood collection tube is the same design anywhere in the world no special SAFETY SYSTEM  to prevent re use  when used to draw blood ?

2) MOST VALUABLE  POINT  For ALL FUTURE  RISKS  just follow POINT 2 from my PREVIOUS  POST that is ONLY WAY  we get hiv hepatitis b & c  , stds or other blood borne infections  from BLOOD DRAW or INJECTION procedure is if nurse re used hollow needle or syringe   From previous patient just before me that is all!

NO other risks even if they did happen for e.g blood collection tube where it has blood in it or ANY OTHER EXAMPLE  like I read in Your forum assuming nurse who is doing blood draw or giving injection is infected with hiv hepatitis b c stds  and pricked herself from tip of needle got blood in needle and I’m holding my child on my lap i got pricked by the needle that caused bleeding  after the nurse
These are not the ways anyone gets infected for any blood borne infection (hiv hepatitis b c stds )

And I HAVE CONFIRMED this from your previous posts and MY DOCTOR AGREES  so I’m sure this answer cannot change now .

1) This never happens and I am confident another patient's blood was not present in the tube. No technician would ever try to use a tube a second time in a different patient. If she tried, the tube would not work:  existing blood would mean the vacuum had been broken, so it could not draw blood from the next patient. On top of that, mixing blood from two patients would totally screw up any test done on that blood, i.e. impossible to know which patient the results belong to. And if somehow it did, of course that blood could not get into the next patient anyway. Therefore questions 1a) and 1b) are irrelevant and I have no further comment about them.

2) This repeats your original comment yesterday. The statement is correct. I'm glad to see your doctor agrees with all this.

On quick look at the link, we indeed are speaking of the same kind of system and tubes used.

You have one more comment permitted in this thread. If you feel you need to ask anything more, be certain it doesn't ask for repeat of anything already discussed. Thanks.

appreciated  point 3 is new question very important

1) in your last post on point 1 you wrote  “somehow it did, of course that blood could not get into the next patient anyway.”.

So you have AGREED with my doctor even for  that blood from previous client cannot flow back from the blood collection tube  into my sons vein where the needle is inserted thus no risk for hiv hepatitis b, c ,Stds  if there was blood in the blood collection tube .
We ARE CLEAR ?

1b) its simple  : no one has  ever been infected from blood collection tube for hiv hepatitis b ,c stds or other blood borne infection when used for blood draw if it was contaminated with blood from previous patient ?

2)  for my point 2 of my previous post we have mentioned both INJECTION & blood draw BOTH  procedures  . I CAN BE SURE  you have READ  the scenario of prick from needle that cause bleeding when holding my  child on lap  during blood draw or injection  procedure & AGREED with  MY DOCTOR that its No risk  for blood borne infection for REASONS DISCUSSED  in point 2 of my previous post

3) DONT share drug injection equipment or have unprotected sex and you will never get hiv hepatitis c &b or stds or other blood borne infections
MY QUESTION  is WHAT DOES  drug injection equipment MEAN ? In simple English it ONLY means HOLLOW NEEDLE  with a SYRINGE attached to it And NOTHING else ?

3a) conclusion  don’t share drug injection equipment which MEANS HOLLOW NEEDLE  with SYRINGE attached to INJECT(push plunger of the syringe)  into  myself with the hollow needle   in   vein  with people who are  infected  with these viruses or have unprotected sex and I will never get hiv hepatitis c ,b or stds or other blood borne infections ignore all other risks

4)  I CONFIRM nothing else matters  we don’t get hiv hepatitis c &b stds other blood borne infections  from objects like glass that cut me caused bleeding or a gauze /bandaid applied on wound  if contaminated wet or dry blood or body fluid

5) blood borne infections means. : hiv hepatitis b c stds etc right ? Covers everything

All these issues have been covered previously. I have read them carefully and agree with all of them. The answers won't change just because you have used different wording, and I have neither the time nor the energy to respond (again) to each of them point by point.

That concludes this thread. I hope the discussion has been helpful. Thank you for agreeing to not return to ask the same or similar questions again. Best wishes and stay safe.
