[Question #9286] Trichomoniasis in throat?

Hello good doctors,

I have been having crippling anxiety about a concern that I have been having. I had sex with a woman around 3 months ago I did have oral sex with her cunnilingus. The day after our encounter I had a lymph node become enlarged on the side of my neck as well as slight redness in my throat. My throat has no pain though it is not sore. After 3 months I got tested for every std under the sun including gonorrhea and chlamydia throat swabs. Full panel blood tests urine test etc. all negative. Including strep tests, Covid etc. throat is still slightly red but not sore, lymph node still there but no pain whatsoever

I then got to googling and found that trichomoniasis can possibly infect the throat:

Am I overreacting? I really don’t want to keep getting tested but these 2 articles have me uneasy. Should I be concerned that I trichomoniasis in my throat? Also I have looked for trichomoniasis throat swabs and I haven’t found any clinic that would have them? Please help ease my mind. Should I be concerned about this? I really just want to get on with my life.  Thank you

I also got my lymph node itself checked. And the doctor said as long as it doesn’t get bigger it shouldn’t be an issue

Welcome to the Forum and thanks for your questions.  I'll be glad to comment.  The likelihood that you have trichomonas of the throat is about the same as your being struck by lightening today.  Trichomonas is not recognized as a meaningful throat infection.  You do not know that your casual partner had trichomonas and even when partners are infected with better recognized STIs which can cause throat infections, most exposures to not lead to infection.  Please note that the CDC link you provide said that oral trich MIGHT occur and the other paper was published as a curiosity.

The lymph node you detected the day after your encounter was not due to your encounter and performance of cunnilingus- it occurred too soon after the exposure.  It typically takes at least several days for any STI to cause signs of infection.

There are no approved tests for trichomoniasis.

Finally, even if you did acquired trich in the throat, many throat infections clear without tratment.

My sincere advice is to do your best not to worry about this.  EWH

When you say there are no approved tests for trichomoniasis you mean for the throat right? Because I got a urine trichomoniasis test that came out negative

Is the urine test approved?

Yes there is are several tests approved for both urine and vaginal swabs.  Because throat infections are a curiosity which are not associated with complications, there are no data or concern about throat exposures to trichomonas.  Please don't worry.  EWH---
