[Question #9315] Hpv and hiv

Hello once again Doctors. Does having hpv suppress your immune system (I've had visble genital warts in the past) enough to affect a 4th gen hiv test? I've had hpv for about a year and a half now. Since the last time I spoke to one of you gentlemen I have taken another 4th gen hiv test after 7 weeks post exposure. Negative once again. I was just wondering if an old hpv infection had any effect on my test. Thank you for your patience I know it can become tedious to answer the same questions over and over again.

Welcome back although I cannot find your prior visits to the Forum. I can assure you however that genital warts/HPV have no impact whatsoever on the reliability of an HIV test. $th generation tests taken any time more than 6 weeks following an exposure are reliable. I encourage you to believe your test results. There is no need for further testing. EWH---

Could you please give me some clarity into hiv elite controller? Are they common? Also a little info about myself...I've had a prostate abcess before and recurring styes in the past. Can this be signs of a weak/ compromised immune system?

Good questions. the phenomenon of elite control of HIV is widely misunderstood. Elite controllers are rare, occurring about once in every 200 new HIV infections (0.5%). Elite controllers are persons with untreated HIV who have very low and sometimes undetectable levels of HIV. One area of misunderstanding however is that elite controllers always have positive tests for HIV antibodies and often positive HIV PCR tests.
Prostate abscess or styes in the eye are not signs of HIV and do not suggest that you have a deficit in your immune system.
Again, I urge you to have confidence in your test results. They prove that you do not have HIV. EWH

And my final question is this... have you ever seen/heard or read a study about anyone turning positive post 6 weeks with a negative 4th gen hiv test?

No, I have never seen or heard of a person whose 4thgeneration HIV test was negative and then went on to become positive.
This will end this thread. Please don't worry. EWH

Thank you doc. A quick inquiry. At 26 days after this particular exposure I developed a rash in both my armpits. Is this typical with ars? I was taking amoxicillin at the time. Do antibiotics cause this? Is it common? The "rash" burned and was red.

No, the rash you describe would be atypical for the ARS. Further the ARS involves not only rash but HIGH fever, severe sore throat, and tends to occur earlier than at 28 days.
Antibiotics can certainly cause rashes.
This completes this thread. EWH
