[Question #9336] Catching hsv2 from a tanning bed

Hello, I’ve been on the website and have asked the question if it is possible to be able to catch hsv2 from a tanning bed. The answer I received is no, but I was wondering if I could get a deeper insight as to why it is not possible. (I have never had any symptoms before going into the bed, and now have experienced monthly outbreaks). I was wondering if I could get clarification, thank you.

The herpes virus can only live a very short time off the human body.  It's quite certain that tanning beds are cleaned between visits, but even if they weren't, it is difficult to imagine how your genitalia would end up rubbing on the surface of the tanning bed surface.  The buttocks is too thick for virus to enter, in the event that the tanning beds were not cleaned.  There must be direct contact between an infected tissue and uninfected tissue/surface for transmission to occur.  The only inanimate exception to this is a sex toy being used actively between two people.  The surface of the tanning bed is an entirely different matter.  Which type of herpes have you been diagnosed with and was they by swab test or antibody test?

Hsv2 and by swab test. Just heard back from the one person I’ve had sex with, and he told me he got multiple tests done, and all were negative. Not sure what to believe or what to think about it. Really sad and confused.

I can understand that that is very confusing.  So you've only had sex with one person in your entire life and they test negative for HSV 2, is that correct?  No genital to genital contact with anyone else without penetration?
I just don't see how you would get HSV from a tanning bed.  Did you speak with the location of the tanning bed?

Correct, no I did not; seemed too late and a little pointless if I tried to bring it up to them with no actual proof it was from their beds. only been with one person and their igg tests and everything were negative. Is there any other way I could’ve gotten hsv2?

So just to be clear - you had a swab test and it was positive and typed, HSV 2.  Have you had the recurrences swab tested as well?  Genital herpes can be either HSV 1 or HSV 2 - is your partner negative for both?

Correct. By recurrences do you mean the continuous outbreaks tested? Then no. But I did have my first outbreak swabbed, positive for hsv2. My partner was negative for both hsv1 and hsv2 with an igg test.

I'm sorry, none of this helps me to understand what is going on here.

Is there any information missing that could help you understand and that I could give you?

I don't think so.  Have you actually seen the test results of the person you had sex with?

Yes-he sent a picture and everything was negative with hsv1 and 2 through an igg test

Timing is very important in doing these antibody tests.  It can take up to 3 months for someone to make antibody to a new infection.  If he had sex with anyone in the weeks prior to having sex with you, the antibody test could remain negative for a while.

There just isn't any logical biological reason that you would acquire genital HSV 2 from a tanning bed.  I am assuming you just laid on the tanning bed? I would like you to do two things: have a recurrence swab tested and typed and also, get an IgG antibody test and see if you have gone from negative to positive. Did you originally have a negative IGG test for HSV 2? Where exactly was the initial outbreak?

Just laying in it nude, yes. Could you explain what you mean by “recurrence swab tested and typed and also, get an IgG antibody test and see if you have gone from negative to positive” the initial outbreak happened 4 days after going into the bed and I got my outbreak swabbed and it came out positive.

I recommend that you have a recurrence swab tested to see that everything you think are recurrences actually are.  And I also would like you to get an IgG antibody test to see what shows up..
