[Question #9414] STI Concern

I am a gay man (on PREP religiously) and recently had unprotected sex with another man of unknown status. I was the receiving partner. Approximately six days after, I begin having stomach issues (cramping and diarrhea).  This has been going on for about four days. I currently have no other symptoms. Could I have gotten an STI from my exposure?

Welcome to the Forum.  I'll be glad to comment.  I am presuming that your exposure included receptive rectal sex.  If so, there are several STIs which might relate to your symptoms.  In particular, some strains of Chlamydia can cause rectal symptoms.

On the other hand, if you were the receptive partner in an oral exposure, although these symptoms might be caused by many other food born illnesses (i.e. food poisoning), there are also infections which might be acquired in through receptive oral sex.  They include Salmonella, Shigella, and Campylobacter.

If your symptoms are persisting or getting worse, I would see a health care professional and seek a stool culture and perhaps a rectal culture for Chlamydia

I hope this helps.  If any part of my response is unclear or other clarification is needed, please use your up to two follow ups for clarification.  EWH
