[Question #9422] Herpes in a long term monogamous relationship

Hello
My wife and I have been married in a monogamous relationship for 47 years, neither had ever had a herpes outbreak either oral or genital. Three years ago my wife developed genital lesions which were diagnosed as oral herpes. We had a active sex life including cunnilingus for the entire time. What caused this to happen after all these years and encounters?
She is now not willing to engage in cunnilingus, fellatio, or vaginal intercourse for fear of reinfection or spreading to other areas.
Can you please provide us with some help and advice on possible risks going forward?
Thanks so much!

I'm sure this happened in the context of a loving, exclusive sexual relationship, and it is actually quite common, more common than you might think.  Thankfully, genital HSV 1 rarely recurs and is rarely transmitted to partners.  In your case, you probably already have oral HSV 1 infection so you don't need to worry about getting it genitally.
She won't become reinfected - she is already infected so you can't get what you've already got.  And she wont' spread it to other areas, especially after having it all these years.
I would very strongly encourage to revisit your sexual relationship.  This should be a small blip in your relationship, not one that should interfere with your sexual relationship.
If she and/or you would like to talk about this, I would be happy to arrange a video consult with you to discuss this further at westoverheights.com
