[Question #9443] Gen 4 test (Access 2 Beckman coulter)
|
Am planning to travel to Greece as they offer Gen 4 blood test. Called the lab and they said the name of the testing equipment (Access 2 Beckman coulter), they also use Syringe to draw blood which give me the impression they are outdated
Is that an accurate lab test in terms of sensitivity/accuracy at 6 weeks?
Other option is to travel to London but if that test in Greece is good it’s only 1 hour flight

I been having sever anxiety after my because after my 7 week test I realized the clinic I tested in was an STD/LGBT clinic, the doctor did use alcohol before blood draw
Now I have all these irrational thought I know you say blood draw is a no risk even but after I knew it’s an STD/LGBT I have all “what if” thought and I feel I need to get tested at 6 weeks after testing in that clinic, also they are registered at CQC but still not inspected all this I knew after tested there should have done my homework before testing
So my only 2 options is test in Greece or London in (Medical Express) where I did my 4 week test and also 6 weeks and feel comfortable testing there as it’s a normal clinic registration and inspected by CQQ and have good grade by CQC

*Doctor did NOT use alcohol before blood draw in that STD/LGBT clinic
*Correction from previous reply

Welcome back to the forum. I reviewed your discussion with Dr. Hook a month ago. I agree with all he said, including his replies to your concerns about risk of HIV from being tested for it. There is no such risk; nobody is ever infected during blood collection etc, no matter what mistakes might be made during the process. You should feel "comfortable with testing" no matter where you go.
I also agree with Dr. Hook that there was no significant risk of HIV from the sexual exposure you described. However, you're obviously obsessed with it and want another HIV test. But why do you think you need an AgAb (4th generation) test? Or to spend the travel expense to find such a test in London, Athens or anywhere else? After 8 weeks, the third generation antibody tests are just as accurate. The only difference between the antibody tests and AgAb tests how quickly they become positive, 8 weeks versus 6 weeks. After 8 weeks, there is no difference, so if you just wait a few days, you'll be able to have an equally certain negative test without traveling.
We are not experts on the individual test systems used by various laboratories. If the test offered is an AgAb (4th generation) test, you can rely on its accuracy regardless of the specific brand of test or the equipment the lab uses. (I don't know the meaning of CQQ -- presumably a regulatory agency of some sort? But I am confident that any lab that does these tests is equally accurate in their test results.
There is no reason to avoid alcohol prior to HIV testing.
Let me know if anything isn't clear.

My worry now is that I tested in that STD/LGBT clinic, which is not inspected by Care Quality Commission in the UK they are only registered
I really feel stupid and extremely worried for testing in such clinic
I did ask for a new needle and doctor open a new one but I didn’t physically examine if it was sealed
It’s been one month but my anxiety is taking over my life every day counts and I been only having protected sex with my girl friend although I tested negative at 4 weeks and did two tests at 7 weeks one at that STD clinic and another in Medical Express Clinic as I started to question other clinic, all negative
I know I have anxiety and seeking professional help, but still have one month for an 8 week test so testing 4th Gen in two weeks will save a lot of time and worth traveling as my anxiety is paralyzing me.. but will just make sure I test in a laboratory not STD clinic
Another question how accurate is antibody test at 52 days?
Thanks and sorry for my anxiety but I been suffering for ten weeks now

Almost certainly your test results are valid, regardless of the clinic's inspection or approval by the commission. The HIV blood tests are highly automated, done on equipment supplied by the test manufacturer, and pretty much foolproof. You can rely on your negative results.
---
You did not need to "ask for a new needle": probably no lab in the world ever re-used blood draw needles.
It is frankly ridiculous for you to travel for the test results you seek.
I already said the antibody tests are conclusvie at 8 weeks, i.e. 56 days. There's probably no difference between 52 and 56 days, so your current result is conclusive.
I'm sorry to hear about your anxiety and how severe it is. However, this forum is not a resource to deal with it. Anxiety almost never resolves with simple repetition of the facts and probabilities, which is all we can do. That you are "seeking professional help" is an excuse that probably means you have not yet actually seen a professional counselor or made an appointment to do so. This forum does not respond to repeated anxiety driven questions: this being your second, it will have to be your last on these topics. ASHA does not wish to collect fees for repeat questions with obvious answers, and continued replies tend to prolong anxiety rather than relieving it. In addition, such questions have little educational value for other users, one of our main goals. Any future questions from you about this exposure, HIV testing, and your worries along these lines will be subject to deletion without reply and without refund of the posting fee. Thank you for your understanding.
This thread will remain open for one last closing comment or question and no more.

Dr Hunter, am not worried about the test results, I got two test results at 6 weeks one from Medical express other WrightPractice (STD/LGBT+) clinic not a Lab both negative
Am not worried anymore from my initial sexual encounter as two tests are negative at 6 weeks
I am extremely worried now about the Blood Draw as Doctor did not use alcohol and after checking their website thoroughly, I realized they are actually an STD/LGBT+ clinic and not yet inspected which is making really stressed out and extremely worried form testing there, am not worried at all form blood draw at Medical express (did test at 4 weeks and 6 weeks never was worried from blood draw)
I wish I can believe there is no risk from a blood draw but my mind is coming up with all “what if” scenarios and if needle was contaminated then am at big risk from this Clinic
I am seeing a mental health doctor for my anxiety and both agreed that will get tested just to curb my anxiety and if am still worried then I will start medication for anxiety
It has been 4 weeks since the blood draw and still need 4 more weeks for a conclusive 3rd gen test that is a lot of time, hence why am considering traveling in two weeks to get a conclusive 4 gen test
1. What’s the accuracy antibody test at 6 weeks and 4 weeks? Maybe this can curb my anxiety…
2. I have access to PCR NRA test, but I read that there is higher change of false positives and if that happens it’s recommended to test for Gen 4 is that true? When is the ideal time to test with PCR NRA? Is it a good idea for that test as diagnostic?
Again sorry for my anxiety but am extremely stressed about that blood draw and don’t know what to do still have to live that anxiety for another month
Thank you

Your worries about blood drawing are irrational and inappropriate. As already stated, nobody ever gets HIV from having blood drawn, regardless of how many other patients at the same facility have HIV.

---
Your opening comments say you are satisfied that your tests show you did not catch HIV. Therefore, questions 1 and 2 are irrelevant and do not matter. It is clear that no replies, repeated any number of times, are going to "curb [your] anxiety". It is not normal to be so resistant to the repeated, reasoned, science-based advice you have had, probably from your own doctor(s) as well as this forum. Such thoughts are abnormal and indicate a significant psychological problem, for which you should seek professional counseling. I suggest it from compassion, not criticism.
That concludes this thread. Please note the paragraph in my reply yesterday about repeated anxiety driven questions. Good bye and good luck.
