Hello Doctors,
Thank you for providing this amazing service. I quick background about me. 34 years old who always practice safe sex. I am currently separated and was married for 9 years. Before I got married, my wife and I got tested and we both tested negative for everything except I tested positive for HSV 1. I do get cold sores since I was a child. On Tuesday I was at a bar and met a lady. We drank and got a little tipsy. I went back to her place and she perform oral sex without a condom and we had vaginal sex with a condom. I don’t usually just sleep around with random women. Not really my thing but now I am a little worry. After reading your responses, I feel reassure about my risk for other stds are really low, but my worry is HSV 2. I know that you can still get it with a condom. What are the risk of me getting hsv 2 after this encounter and should I get tested for it?
Regards,

I think the risk of you getting HSV 2 at a single encounter, using a condom, is incredibly low. Condoms reduce transmission of HSV 2 from women to men by 65%, so yes, they are not perfect, but pretty darn good, and the single encounter thing makes it even less risky.
Observe for any skin changes for the next week. That will take you out to 10 days from the encounter. If you don't develop any sores in the genital area during that time, I think you are safe to assume that you are not infected. I don't recommend testing in your situation as there are many false positives on these IgG tests right now. If you get really anxious about this, you could do a herpes western blot 12 weeks out, but that's expensive and somewhat complicated and probably not necessary medically in your situation.

Hello Terri,
Thank you for your response. I will follow your advice and not get tested. It’s been 9 days since my encounter and I have not develop any sores in my genital area. I have felt some burning sensations but it must be me feeling normal sensations that I was not aware before. I do have 1 more questions to ask you?
1) since I already have HSV1. What are the chances that I have caught HSV2 and did not develop any symptoms?

We don't have an exact percentage on that. We do know that people who have baseline positive HSV 1 infection have fewer symptoms when they acquire HSV 2.
If this worry gets to you over time and you can't let it go, you could do the herpes western blot antibody test. It is kind of expensive and a bit more trouble to obtain than the traditional IgG test but it is not vulnerable to false positives.
