[Question #9519] Crabs or any std

I recently visited a massage parlor. No oral vaginally or anal sex was carried out. I did get a body to body massage. I made sure her vagina did not touch my penis. If anything it may have braised across.

On day 8 post massage I felt what I thought was very light tingling feeling in my public hairs.i did the wrong thing and googled and saw that crabs is most likely. So I went to a store and picked up an OTC cream to apply. It contained permethrin 1%. What I didn't know is it was to be used once every 7 days. I applied the cream on for 3 days straight. The cream is called nix.

My 3rd application was on December 26. Shortly after the application I started to feel tingling/crawling all over my body including my legs, arms and palms where I didn't feel this before. I went to a walk in and she said she didn't think I had crabs/lice or or it would be noticeable but I read you cannot see them with a naked eye, so I am not sure if she wanted to just get me out. She did an examination with her eye and no use of a magnifying glass as I have read you need that.

Could this be crabs and she may have missed it?

Could the tingling feeling be another std possibly. I no longer feel my public hair itchy or tingly rather the rest of my body.

Could this be MS. I am a 33 year Indian male in Canada.

Thank you for your help.

Sorry last part of my question is it safe to resume unprotected sex with my partner based on that exposure. I want to ensure I don't cause her any issues.

Welcome to the forum. Thank you for your confidence in our services.

I think it unlikely you ever had pubic lice (crabs). Tingling or itching alone never are sufficient to make that diagnosis, or even to seriously suspect it. Do you shave your pubic area, like most younger men these days? If so, it makes crabs extremely unlikely; there even have been research papers on the dramatic decline in frequency of pubic louse infestation in the past 20 years, due to pubic shaving.

If your pubic hair is intact, then if you have crabs you should be able to see the nits (louse eggs) -- tiny white spots adhering to your pubic hairs, usually very close to the skin. Had you not already used permethrin (Nix®), you might have been able to identify the lice themselves -- light brown, about 1 mm across (you can google for images). But even with effective treatment, the nits still should be visible. You also might notice red spots that itch, or small bluish bruise-like spots.

In the event you did have lice, there are zero reported cases of them being resistant to permethrin and persisting after a couple of treatments. So if you had crabs, you can be confident the problem is now gone.

No other STD causes pubic area itching. And based on your description of the massage events, you were at no risk of any STD. There is no reason you cannot safely continue unprotected sex with your regular partner. If the pubic area tingling continues, see a health care provider, ideally a dermatologist.

I hope these comments are helpful. Let me know if anything isn't clear.

Thank you
a)
If i placed the OTC cream only on Monday this week so 2 days apart is that enough time if i did have crabs or lcie to get rid off it. asking to ensure i wont infect my partner.

I did check my pubic hair (which i am unshaven) and did not see any crabs. Dry skin yes but no eggs or rash. The itching on the hair is no longer there. rather my skin around my body has a crawling feeling (not sure if this is a skin issue).
b}
I also want to confirm that the white spots would they be noticeable to the eye - referring to my rather quick visit with the doctor who said nothing was there .

thank you

a) Nix is an insecticide and works as rapidly as they all do. If you hit a wasp or fly with Raid, they're paralyzed within a few minutes and dead within an hour or so. While I'm not an expert in treatment of lice, I assume it's the same for lice and Nix.

b) Crab lice are often hard to see, but nits usually are obvious if you and/or your doctor know what to look for.

Skin "crawling" is not a common symptom of crabs -- just itching from the bites.

One last thing. This tingling all round my body started only after i overapplied the Nix cream.

The instructions said use once only for 7 days. I did not read that till day 3 (which was Monday) and i felt the tingling all round my body only after the application of this cream. Before i never felt such tingling all round.

could that be possibly related.
thank you

We don't try to keep up on symptoms or advice on non STD issues and I'm not aware that Nix can cause such tingling. However, a quick web search suggests it may be possible:  pyrethrins, the active ingredient in Rid (a Nix competitor) can cause a tingling sensation, and as the name sort of suggests, permethrin (the active ingredient in Nix) is related, so it may be possible. A dermatologist should be able to answer this better than we can.

Going back to the diagnosis itself, I'll stress again that the massage you had is an unlikely source of crab lice, and I continue to believe you never had crabs. I can't prove it, but all things considered it seems very unlikely.

That completes the two follow-up comments and replies included with each question and so ends this thread. I hope the discussion has been useful. Happy new year and stay safe!
