[Question #9568] HIV rapid test

Hello Doctor, I’ve asked several questions before regarding an exposure which occurred 5 months ago, i have done a rapid test at 5 months post exposure and the result was non reactive, i want to ask you if that result is conclusive after 5 months, and is there a chance of false negative happening, the test didn’t specify which generation was used, but seeing that i live in a 3rd world country, it could be any generation, 3rd or 2nd, do you think i should do another test to confirm or should i move on? If it is truly conclusive, does that mean the symptoms that I experienced such as diarrhoea, fatigue, generalised rash, Oral thrush which haven’t gone yet but i am going to start treatment on it tomorrow are not related to acute HIV? I’m also currently experiencing a generalised rash which was diagnosed by a dermatologist as folliculitis, I don’t know if it is common with HIV. What do you think doctor? Thank you for your help!

Just to add, other symptoms I’m currently experiencing 5 months post exposure besides the folliculitis and oral thrush are;  rash on cheeks, and center of forehead that resembles acne, it itches maybe once or twice a day (which ive read online that it resembles eosinophilic folliculitis, first started around 2 or 3 months post exposure and still hasn’t gone yet, im also experiencing occasional diarrhoea, my stomach feels kind of funny sometimes, especially when driving a car, which has never happened to me before, I’m also experiencing occasional tension headaches and brain fog, and also muscle weakness, do you think these symptoms could be related to HIV?

I'm sorry to see you back. These questions were answered in your previous threads.

As you have been informed in your three previous threads, all HIV blood antibody tests, rapid and lab-based, are conclusive by 6-8 weeks, and for sure by 3 months. Also, it is not possible to have HIV symptoms and have negative HIV antibody testing:  your negative test results prove something other than HIV explains all symptoms you have now and any symptoms you may develop in the future, no matter how typical for HIV they seem to be. It does not matter what symptoms you have. All symptoms you describe are caused much more frequently by various minor health problems than by HIV infection. Continue to work with your doctor about your symptoms and do your best to believe, understand, and accept the repeated, reasoned, science-based reassurance you have had, both on this forum and probably from your own doctors.

In your second question about this exposure and HIV testing (no. 9063, 4 months ago) my closing reply advised you that future repeat questions would be deleted without reply and without refund of the posting fee, with a detailed explanation of why we have such a policy. Dr. Hook did not invoke that policy and answered your third question (9269, 2 months ago). However, you should re-read it. This definitely must be your last about this exposure, your HIV test results, etc. Future attempts will indeed be deleted without reply. Thank you for your understanding.

I do hope this final response helps you move on with no further worry about having HIV. Best wishes and stay safe.
