[Question #9658] HIV Truvada Concern

Hello, at the end of December I went on a bender for a few days and had a lot of random gay sex as a bottom, some I don’t even remember. Probably around 15 or so partners if I had to guess. I know it’s bad, I’ve only had gay sex twice before this.
Anyway, I took one or two Truvada pills in the middle of my bender or right after it, I don’t quite remember, then I stopped it. 5 weeks post encounter I am negative for HIV and everything except chlamydia in my rectum, which wasn’t surprising.
Can I trust my HIV 4th gen results 5 weeks post encounter with the Truvada? I currently have a very sore throat and was relieved with the results but now I’m not sure if I can trust them.

Welcome to the forum. Thank you for your question.

As you probably understand, there are no data on which to base an answer to this question. However, it is unlikely that only 1-2 doses of Truvada would alter the time to reliable negative testing for HIV. Negative HIV AgAb (4th generation) blood tests are 98-99% conclusive by 5 weeks, 100% conclusive by 45 days (which we generally round off, on this forum, to 6 weeks), so you'll want to have one more test at least at that time. If you'd like a bit of extra certainty, perhaps one more test at 8 weeks, which I am sure would be conclusive.
It is not possible to have HIV symptoms and not have detectable antibody. Although your negative test result at 5 weeks may not quite rule out HIV, it does prove your symptoms are not due to a new HIV infection. And of course we're at the peak of cold season; and Covid of course is a possibility as well. But not HIV.
I hope these comments are helpful. Let me know if anything isn't clear.
