[Question #9668] HIV exposure follow up

|
So I asked a question a month ago and got a really good answer.. I ended up getting a hiv 4th gen test 25 days after exposure. Test on 12/19, and it came out negative. Should I go for a second test for conclusiveness or is 25 days enough time? Thanks

Welcome back to the Forum. On this occasion I happened to pick up your question and will be the one answering. To prepare I reviewed your earlier interaction with Dr. Handsfield and completely agree with all that he said- the exposure you described was essentially a no risk event and Dr. Handsfield suggested that there was no pressing need for HIV testing. I agree with him. That said, I also understand that the reassurance that a negative test can provide. Your results at day 25 would have detected about 99% of recent infections, providing further assurance that you did not get HIV from the exposure you described. If I were you, I would not bother with further testing although, technically results of testing are not 100% conclusive until 42-45 days following exposure.
Have confidence. I am confident you did not get HIV from the exposure you described. EWH
