[Question #9678] Herpes concern
|
Hello,
I have a couple of questions about herpes. At the end of last month I had unprotected vaginal and oral sex . About 2 days later tingling started right after urinating. It is still going on now and it only happens after urinating and not during. As of today it's been 22 days. I tested for gonorrhea and chlamydia after 10 days both were negative. I do not see any lesions or blisters on or around my penis or anywhere else. I've had HSV 1 since I was 15 so I kind of know what I'm looking for.
My questions are,
Should I be concerned about genital herpes?
And would you recommend testing?

With the symptoms that you describe and no sore or lesions, I don't 'think herpes should be a concern of yours.
The quality of the IgG tests right now is so poor, I am not suggesting that people get tested unless they have symptoms that are more specific than tingling. If you do test, and you have waited at least 10 weeks for an IgG and it's negative, then there is about a 92% chance that's accurate. But if it is positive, that's where we run into trouble with false positives. And lots of them

Thank you for responding to my question. When I got tested for my bacterial stds my doctor did a urinalysis as well and everything came back normal. If herpes were an issue would the wbc be elevated?

probably not, no. That would only be true if you had lesions in the urethra.

The tingling that I have been experiencing has decreased a great deal. It has been 25 days since it started. There are no visible sores, blisters or lesions.
Can I put this behind me?

I am hesitant to say you can put this behind you altogether as I never say that when in this situation with someone and no testing has been done and we don't know the HSV status of the people involved. But I will say without doing any testing at all, it seems very unlikely to me that you acquired HSV in this situation. Your symptoms don't suggest it and there is limited risk with a single exposure. Afraid that's the best I can do with a firm statement.
