[Question #9701] Hsv 1 razor transmission

Hi, I reached out a long time ago regarding my HSV 1 and you were very helpful. I am reaching out to make sure I didn’t put my daughter at risk. I was diagnosed with HSV 1 20 years ago and have had a few outbreaks since. I haven’t had an outbreak recently. My puberty aged daughter decided to use my razor to shave her vagina for the first time. I had not used the razor to shave in a few days. Also, I do not have an active outbreak or lesions. The day after she shaved she had what looked like razor burn and said her vagina itches and also hurt on the inside (I am not sure is she cut the inside at all). I had a Telehealth appointment today and the doctor said what she had looked like razor burn and not herpes. She also has what appears to be fever blisters from time to time. The symptoms appear the next day after shaving. How long can hsv 1 live on an inanimate object to where it can be transmitted? Should I be worried at all about her possibly getting HSV 1 from my razor given the scenario? I am panicked to think I could have given this to my daughter

Lindsey, you posted less than 24 hours ago, sometimes we take up to 48 hours to post.
The situation that you describe does not present any risk to your daughter.
First, HSV 1 genital infection is rarely shed, and certainly rarely if you were diagnosed years ago.
Second, the virus does not live long at all on inanimate objects, like a razor.
Third, if she gets cold sores or fever blisters on her mouth, she already has HSV 1 and she would not get it again in a new location.
She likely has these symptoms as many of us do when shaving in the genital area. I don't think you need to worry right now at all.

Thank you so much. I didn’t realize until later that it was 48 hours. How long could the virus live on a razor and be transferred to someone? I am thinking your right since I didn’t have an outbreak the razor wasn’t used for days there’s no possible risk? Thank you and I’m sorry to ask again I would just feel so horrible giving anything to her. I guess this is just normal from the first time shaving and razor burn. Thank you again for everything

I do understand why you would be worried, but with the timing and no breakout and a long time between uses, I do think you are just fine. But in the future, I probably would recommend she have her own razor.
