[Question #9750] HSV1

Hello I was recently diagnosed with HSV1 with an IGG blood test. My lab/provider did give me am index rating because they don't quantify the results. Do you think it's worth my time to get retested?

About half the population in the US has HSV 1 infection, the cause of cold sores. Have you ever in your life had a cold sore on your lip? If yes, then that's why you test positive. If this is a concern for you, then you may wish to obtain an IgG test that gives you an index value, that would be through Quest or LabCorp. But the igG test for HSV 1 also misses 30% of infections so beware of a negative.

Thanks for answering my question and I don't recall ever having a cold sore at most a pimple. I called quest but they told me their hv1/hv2 test don't give an index value?

Yes, it does. They come across my desk daily with index values. I have no idea why they would say that. I also know that LabCorp does. But the best antibody test is the western blot - spendy but very accurate and done only at the University of Washington. Your own provider can help you obtain that or I can help you at westoverheights.com. You can call UW at 206-685-6066 and get the necessary kit sent to your home. You could also try doing it at labCorp
