[Question #9764] Question about Chlamydia and gonorrhea

My boyfriend had a pretty checkered sexual past - he has been tested for everything except chlamydia and gonorrhea - we have been together for 13 years and I am certain we have been faithful to each other, but in his past he had numerous encounters always protected for vaginal - most times for oral - he is negative for everything except what he was never checked for (chlamydia and gonorrhea).  He has BPH and when he doesn't take his flowmax he can get minor testicle pain and its hard for him to urinate and then I get nervous - its probably silly - but could he still have chlamydia and gonorrhea if he ever caught those diseases or would they have gone away on its own after 10-15 years - I read some articles and some threads from Dr. HH and Dr. Hook saying these diseases would be resolved by their immune system in mostly likely a year or two without treatment and I also have had a test a few years ago where I was negative for everything (HPV, Chlamydia and gonorrhea) - we don't have sex much because he also has ED (he won't get treatment because he is afraid it will hurt his eyes) - but based on what I have just told you his current symptoms he has on off the last couple of years wouldn't be from infections he had 10+ years ago correct?  I am worried about nothing and am not at any risk of contracting these diseases?  Thanks in advance for your help.

Welcome back to the forum.

This is a simpler and more straightforward question than your previous ones, with a quick answer. Gonorrhea and usually chlamydia in males are cleared by the immune system well before a year -- typically a few weeks for gonorrhea and probably almost always within 3-6 months for chlamydia. Neither has ever been found to cause benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) or the sorts of urinary symptoms you describe for your husband. Whether or not he ever had gonorrhea or chlamydia, he doesn't have either one now and his past sexual history (or STD risk) have nothing to do with his BPH or urinary symptoms.

I hope these comments are helpful. Let me know if anything isn't clear.

thanks for your quick response - one other thing - he only has one eye and he also has ED - he is afraid to take viagra because he read that it can cause eye problems, I have tried to convince him he will be okay as has our GP - do you have any opinion on this - could him taking viagra cause his to become blind or is this just a very rare side effect?

actually one other question Dr.  - I read some threads on your site tonight and came across chronic Chlamydia - is it correct that is very rare in men, or almost never happens - and certainly wouldn't be causing symptoms 10-15 years later correct?  For men what might be the longest they could have chlamydia or gonorrhea before it clears on its own?  Last question - I know I'm inquisitive so my apologies in advance and thanks again Dr. for having a service where peopel can ask these very personal questions.  Thanks again.

"I read some threads on your site tonight and came across chronic Chlamydia..." Interesting. I don't recall ever discussing "chronic chlamydia". "is it correct that is very rare in men, or almost never happens - and certainly wouldn't be causing symptoms 10-15 years later correct?" Yes, correct. Did you read my reply above? I haven't changed my mind in the last few hours! "...what might be the longest time....?" Also answered above. A few months, maybe a year at most.

As for Viagra, eye problems, etc:  I have no advice. This is strictly a site for STD information, not other areas of sexual health. I have little professional experience treating ED and have never prescribed Viagra. Sorry.
