[Question #9780] Fusobacterium spp

I know fusobacterium isn’t an sti but I didn’t know where else to go to ask this question. I got a pcr test done and it showed a high level of fusobacterium in my throat. I have redness in throat and a lymph node but no pain. Not sure what to do. Is it the type of pathogen where if found in the throat you should get rid of it? Or can you live with it and be healthy? I’ve heard it’s a normal flora and also that it’s a serious pathogen. What antibiotics would I take to get rid of it? It’s going to take about 2 months to see an infectious disease doctor in my city so I’d rather not see one if I don’t have to. Doctor handsfield answered a question of mine on health tap but I had some more questions if you didn’t mind? Is it simple to cure? What are the recommended antibiotics to take? I have a girlfriend and we kiss and stuff should she get tested and treated also? I’m really scared and not sure what to do with this? Doctors don’t know what it is?

Welcome to the Forum.  I'll provide a singe PRELIMINARY comment. As you know, this site and our greatest expertise relates to STIs and I would not want to mislead you..  Most typically Fusobacterium is a bacteria which can be associated with dental/gum infections as well as, on some occasions sore throat.  When associated with sore throat it should be treated, often with an antibiotic called clindamycin.  My advice would be to start by seeing your dentist.

I will not have further comments.  I hope that this preliminary information is helpful.  EWH

Would redness in the throat with no pain be indicative of an infection?

I would not be worried if there was no pain.  Again, I suggest you see your dentist for these questions.  I will not be providing further answers.  EWH---
