[Question #9786] HSV-2 and Oral Sex

I have done quite a bit of research but can find very little data/evidence on what are the actual risks of transmitting HSV-2 to a partner performing oral sex on a woman. I found one study that noted it was about a 2% risk, but not sure if or whether that took into account being on anti-viral medication. I understand the safest option is to use a barrier but it would be nice and helpful to fully understand the risks. My latest test after a year after my initial diagnosis, with a year on standard valtrex, is that I have a negative result but there is a very low amount of antibodies. Thank you!

You are correct - there is very little data about the risk of acquiring HSV 2 by giving oral sex to someone who has HSV 2 genital infection.  Or is that your question?  If someone has only genital HSV 2, then there is no risk of giving oral sex to someone and transmitting the HSV 2 to them.

But I'm not sure I understand the rest of what you wrote.  You were diagnosed but your antibody test is negative?  Or is there a low index value on the antibody test?  Could you go back and talk a bit more about your diagnostic experience for me, please? Thanks

Hi and thanks for the reply!

I had a very small outbreak over a year ago, first time, and swab test noted it was HSV-2. A blood test two months later (after the outbreak)  reflected it, as well. I just had my yearly appointment and the blood test was negative for HSV-2 as it wasn’t within the positive range, although it was .14%. I take 500 mg of Valtrex daily and am in my late 40s.

Was the blood test an IgG or IgM?  The IgM test should never be used and the IgG test misses 8% of HSV 2 and perhaps more if you are on daily Valtrex which can influence antibody testing.  You should believe the swab test and not worry about giving oral sex if your outbreak was only genital.
