[Question #9830] Hiv risk/testing

Good evening, I am a mid 30's female that had either a very high risk single exposure (unprotected with a man that has sex with men and women) OR zero exposure as I am unsure if this event took place (alcohol involved). I had what I believed were symptoms after 2 weeks that have since resolved. No fever, no sore throat, no swollen glands. I took a 4th generation test after 29 days that was negative and then took an oraquick test at 70 days that was also negative. My intention was to wait until 90 days for the oraquick but my anxiety got the best of me and I took it early. The only thing I am experiencing now is dizziness but I've had that for a few months now, I've also been an anxious mess. My question is, can I relax a little with the two tests I've had so far? I know I need one more test to be considered conclusive but is it at least very unlikely I have HIV? I appreciate your response.

Thanks for your questions. I'll be glad to comment and hope that my responses will be reassuring. You can be confident that your symptoms were not due to recent HIV- if they had been your 4 week test would have been positive. When persons have symptoms due to HIV, 4th generation tests are always positive. In addition, at 4 weeks (29 days would count) more than 99% of persons who will develop positive tests will do so. We have never seen or heard of persons with negative tests at 4 weeks go on to develop reactive tests at a later date. Finally, I would consider your 70 day Oraquick conclusively positive.
I would be entirely confident that you did not acquire HIV from the encounter you describe. I hope that this response is helpful EWH

Thank you so much for this quick response. I also read specifically in this forum that medications and conditions do not affect the accuracy of hiv testing. Is this true for immunosuppresant medication such as Remicade? I have been on Remicade for 5 years and while my physician assures me that this medication should not suppress my immune system to the extent of delaying antibody production, I'd like your thought as well.

I agree with your doctor. The Remicade should not impact the accuracy of the testing you have done. EWH ---
