[Question #9855] Testing for HSV2

My boyfriend's former girlfriend was positive for HSV2. She never had an outbreak while they were together. My boyfriend's doctor advised that he could not be tested for Herpes unless he had an outbreak, which he never has. Will a blood test give accurate results if he has HSV2 even if he hasn't had an outbreak?

Good question.  The routinely available antibody IgG blood tests have a pretty high rate of false positive results.  But he could take one and see what he gets and if he gets a positive and has no symptoms, he could confirm with the gold standard test called a herpes western blot.  It's only done at the University of Washington but we can arrange it from almost anywhere.  He just needs to be aware of the false positive situation right now before he tests so he's ready to take another step if necessary.
