[Question #9866] Hiv testing but symptoms

Having had an exposure several months back now, involving a street CSW in which unprotected oral was performed which turned aggressive once I’d come to my drunken senses and moved away which in turn led to biting and some bleeding of penis. I developed rather a large and alarming amount of symptoms….. firstly tingling of the body a few weeks after, followed by rash on palms of hands, sometimes on feet and head of penis when erect. Also headaches and general feeling of dizziness, white tongue with ulcers, eyes blood shot, diarrhea for two days, fatigue, swollen lymph nodes in neck. This has lasted with different levels of severity for six months now. But in this time I’ve done the following tests… hiv duo test 5 weeks neg from doctor, then sent away blood sample to lab at 7 weeks for all STIs all neg, then at 90 days another duo hiv test by doctor again neg but found I had high IGA antibodies >250.
I’ve also done a insti hiv test at 6months neg and oraquick 7 months neg. Do you think further testing is needed?

Welcome to the forum. Occasionally we get questions in which there is enough information in the title the user selects to allow a highly reliable reply, before reading the question itself. As I write this, I have not read beyond the title, but I can tell you your HIV worries should be over; I can give you virtually 100% assurance that you do not have HIV and that something else is causing your symptoms.

In addition, your question is perfectly timed. I just finished replying to the question before yours (#9865). That reply directly addresses your situation.

Now I have read your entire question. Guess what? Your symptoms are less typical for HIV than you seem to think, and they started too late. And you have been over tested:  your negative blood tests from 7 weeks on are conclusive. They prove you do not have HIV and that something else explains your symptoms. In addition, there has never been a proved case of HIV transmitted oral to penis:  even if your CSW partner has HIV, you weren't at risk for HIV (regardless of how "aggressive" the event was).

I hope these comments are helpful. Please read my reply to 9865 for more context about your symptoms and blood test results. Let me know if anything isn't clear.

Thanks doctor but I must admit I’ve never felt as unwell as I have in the previous few months following this event. At times it also feels as though I’m generally Losing my ability to remember small details like peoples names, places visited etc. as if I’m having some level of confusion. Also I level of weakness throughout the body I’ve not experienced before.
As you say though the amount of tests I’ve taken and at such a time leaves me confused to the course of all these symptoms. Would you say insti tests and oraquick tests are reliable?
Also surely if blood was exposed from both myself and CSW surely this would present a risk?
Thanks for your prompt response

Sorry also can I add would you consider high levels of IGA antibodies as a possible concern for hiv infection? I’m assuming these antibodies aren’t what tests directly look for?

We limit our medical advice on this forum to STDs and HIV. It is clear that none of these explains your symptoms, so I have no further advice about them. Except I will point out that HIV does not cause symptoms like this; and no, even if there was blood exposure during the oral sex event, there was little or no risk of HIV. But most important, all your blood tests are valid and prove you do not have HIV. All I can do is advise you to continue to work with your doctor about other causes and possible treatment. Good luck.---

And did you read my reply to question 9865? If not, please do so -- carefully. It answers all your questions. Do let me know if any questions remain, but please stop worrying about HIV. None of this is HIV, and your symptoms also have absolutely nothing to do with the sexual event you have described. It's not an issue at all.

And no: IgA levels have nothing at all to do with HIV. Only the HIV blood tests themselves are important.---
