[Question #9890] Recent Testing

Hello,
I recently, 3 weeks ago got the IgG testing for hsv 1 and 2. My hsv 1 levels were 20.7 and hsv 2 came back positive at 1.36 as well. I acquired a form of hsv from my previous partner and he had outbreaks both on his mouth and genitals but he did not know the exact type as he had never been tested. He had very few outbreaks a year genital wise 1 -2 at most a year and some years none at all. Hasn’t had an oral outbreak in 7-8 years. I myself have never once in my life had an oral outbreak but I have had an outbreak on the front of my thigh it was a small  cluster of tiny blisters that was my first outbreak. If I ever had anything on my genitals it was 6 years ago and it was pretty mild never being on suppressive therapy  Could it be possible the hsv 2 at 1.36 is a false positive?

Also there is so information on the risk of oral sex. Am I high risk for someone to perform unprotected oral sex on me with these ranges . Could they get anything or is it safe? I’m recently on 500 mg of valtrex daily for a month now since I am dating again and I don’t want to give it anyone if possible.

Did you have the group of blisters on your thigh swab tested, is that how you know it was your first outbreak?  Was it typed, HSV 1 or HSV 2?
Your index value is so low for HSV 2 that this could be a false positive and the CDC recommends that you obtain a confirmatory test to know if this was a true or false positive.  The herpes western blot is tthe best confirmatory test.  If you do have HSV 2 genitally, someone giving you oral sex presents some risk of them acquiring this orally but not a high risk, I believe.

Hi Terri,
Thank you for your response. Unfortunately I did not at the time I knew my partner had given it to me so I didn’t research into it . Now that we are no longer together I want to educate myself on exactly what I have for potential future partners. How can I order a western blot?
I was thinking it was false positive as well because I was not on valtrex at the time of the test and I was with my partner for 8 years so I assumed the antibodies would be higher like the hsv 1 values. However he did have hsv 1 since he was younger before getting it genitally which as I’m reading here through previous questions is highly unlikely. Or could he have it im both locations is it possible??
Ok on the oral I assume if I haven’t had outbreaks in several years and on valtrex it would be pretty safe then ? I know with hsv there is AJ ways a risk bc of the shedding .

Thank you

The western blot is done only at the University of Washington. You can order a kit from them at 206-685-6066. You can work with your own healthcare provider to order this test or you can work with me at westoverheights.com. I doubt that if he had HSV one orally when he was younger that he would then get it genitally later.  If you get more blisters somewhere and be sure to have them swab tested but I would also encourage you to get a western blot for clarity about what you actually do and do not have.
