[Question #9903] Possibly DGI

Hello Doctor,

Thanks so much for addressing my first questions, but I have another regarding disseminated gonorrhea. I know that you previously said that hand jobs are no risk, but this question is more general. How long after a gonorrhea infection does it progress to DGI? Is it possible that I could have passed gonorrhea to my partner in July 2022 and she start experiencing DGI symptoms in April? The timeline is below:
- we last had sex in July 2022
- on April 1 2023 she had a hand rash on the back of her hand
— on April 15 she started having some shoulder soreness that comes and goes  (rash is still there and spreading)

Does this timeline and symptoms suggest DGI?

Welcome back to the Forum although I'm sorry you felt the need.  You stated previously that you only exposure to other partners is mutual masturbation.  If this is the case, as I said before, there is NO risk for an STI, even if you  got partner's genital secretions on yourself during the process.  The CDC, WHO and all experts agree that mutual masturbation is a no risk sexual event.  The rash of DGI is typically necrotic, inflamed pustules.  That certainly does not sound like what your partner has.  Both her rash and her sore shoulder are terribly non-specific problems which are virtually certainly NOT DGI resulting from your interactions with other men.

As I also said in my earlier reply, the internet is NOT your friend here.  I suspect that is where the concern about DGI came from and if so, you are being misled.  If there are additional questions, feel free to ask but I remain confident that you did not get gonorrhea or another STI from your outside relationships and that you have not passed an infection on to your regular partner.  EWH

Thanks so much doctor. That really puts thing into perspective for me. Her rash doesn’t look like the dgi rashes that I see on the internet. One general question- I read that DGI usually shows up within a month after infection. Is this true? Or can DGI develop months/years after an untreated gonorrhea infection?

Typically DGI. shows up relatively soon after infection. It is a manifestation of active infection, not a delayed reaction. Please don’t worry. EWH.---

Thanks doctor. One last question just for my knowledge. Her rash is recurring and comes and goes since August (it is on her inner forearm, and leaves dark marks when it heals). Is this consistent with how DGI rash presents or not really?

No, the rash of DGI does not come and go.  It may resolve if the infection is untreated but the rash does not come and go.  Nor would it typically be scarring (leave residual marks).   Something other than gonorrhea is causing your partner's rash.

As you note, this will complete this thread.  EWH
