[Question #9974] Hep C

Hello...I'm a healthcare worker and just wanted to ask a question.  A patient who is a Hep C carrier (undetectable recent viral load) returned an item to the pharmacy and I touched it with my bare hands. I bite my fingers a lot and had a small open cut on my thumb and maybe a tiny cut on my index finger. I noticed on the package that there was some wet blood (unsure if it was my own or the patients) I contacted my employers Occupational exposure department and they said this is a no risk event and nothing needs to be done. Would you concur? I'm just trying to put my mind at ease?  Also should I be concerned about HIV? or any other hepatitis viruses...

Thank you

I may also had the patient had a negative hep antibody test in 2015 and multiple “not detectable “ hep c RNA tests.  Most recent was 2017.   But still listed as a hep carrier?

Welcome back, but I'm sorry you found it necessary.

I agree exactly with your employer's occupational health team:  zero risk for hepatitis C virus infection in this situation. It is not known to be transmitted by oral contact with infected blood, or by any contact with blood in the environment. Ditto for HIV:  zero risk. Don't worry about this.

Just to clarify even though the patient is a documented hep c carrier..still a no worry event?
I appreciate you

I was more concerned about the open cut on my thumb that was slightly bleeding coming into contact with his blood on the box.   Once I noticed the blood my hands went nowhere near my mouth lol

As I said, oral exposure to HCV does not result in infection. And you also repotprt the patient most recently tested negative. Zero risk. Let it go.

I’m sorry Dr HHH.  I think you’re misunderstanding. My concern is my open cut on my thumb coming into contact with his blood..I will let it go …as always I appreciate your insight..

There is no misunderstanding.  Sorry I didn't mention your "open cut", but my reply took it into account. Move on!---
